Most couples picture June or August. But anyone who has been to an October wedding knows why more people choose autumn: the light is low and warm, the colours are deeper and the mood is more intimate.

- Golden hour falls early in the afternoon, so beautiful photos fit easily into the day
- No heat, nobody sweating in a suit during the ceremony

The downside, honestly: less predictable weather and early darkness. You can prepare for both.
Colours that suit autumn
Think rust, terracotta, burgundy, mustard, olive and deep brown, combined with a calm base of cream or sand. A few accents in flowers, napkins and candles are enough.

Dahlias are at their best in September and October. Chrysanthemums, copper and peach roses, amaranthus, eucalyptus and berry branches work well too, as do dried elements like pampas and lunaria. Ask your florist what is local and in season.
Dress code for guests
- Warmer fabrics like velvet, wool, tweed and satin with sleeves
- Deep colours rather than pastels
- A coat or wrap that matches the outfit
- Shoes that can handle grass or gravel
A plan B for rain and early dusk
Pick a venue where the ceremony can move indoors, and decide on the morning itself. Keep a basket of neutral umbrellas at the entrance. In October the sun sets earlier each week, so schedule group photos early in the afternoon. After sunset switch to candles, string lights and a fire pit with blankets.
